A Local SEO Checklist for Electrical Contractors

0

Most local SEO checklists repeat the same old steps. You have seen them all before. This one covers the small items that electrical contractors often miss.

These gaps cost calls and sometimes get profiles suspended. Each fix takes less than an hour. Work through the list in order, and tick each box before you move on.

1. Remove Extra Keywords From Your Business Name

Make sure that the name in your Google listing matches the name on your truck and invoices. Some people will include other information like “Smith Electric | Best Electrician in Calgary.” This sounds great, but it is against Google’s guidelines.

Google can suspend a profile for this. A suspension can take weeks to fix. Keep the name plain and honest.

2. Hide Your Home Address and Set Service Areas

Many electricians work from home. If that is you, hide your address on the profile. Customers do not visit you. You visit them. Google allows this for service businesses.

Then add the towns you serve. Stay realistic. Pick places your crew can reach within an hour. A long list of far towns does not help.

3. Write Clear Page Titles for Every Service Page

The page title is the blue line people see on Google. Many sites leave it as “Home” or “Services.” That wastes a strong signal. Use a simple pattern: service, city, then business name. For example, “Panel Upgrades in Halifax | Smith Electric.”

Keep it under 60 characters so Google does not cut it off. Some owners hand this work to an expert in search optimization for electrical contractors, and that is a fair choice. Others finish it in one afternoon.

4. Set Special Hours for Holidays and Emergencies

Storms do not follow a calendar. People search for electricians on holidays too An unclear listing sends them to your competitor’s business. Add special hours ahead of time for days like:

  • Christmas Day and Boxing Day
  • Canada Day
  • Long weekends
  • Any 24-hour emergency days

Review them each season. A listing that says “closed” on a busy night costs you a job you could have taken.

5. Add Electrician Schema to Your Website

Schema is hidden code that tells Google the facts about your business in a neat format. It does not change how your page looks. Google reads it and understands you faster. Ask your web developer to add the “Electrician” type with these details:

  • Business name and phone number
  • Address or service area
  • Opening hours
  • Links to your profiles

You can test the rich results with Google’s free Rich Results Test. It can show which results can be generated with the structured data you are using for your landing page.

6. Add Alt Text to Your Job Photos

Alt text is a short description of an image. It helps people who use screen readers. It also helps Google understand your photos.

Rename your files too. “IMG_4821.jpg” tells nobody anything. Try “panel-upgrade-kelowna.jpg” instead. Then write alt text like “Electrician replacing a 100 amp panel in a Kelowna home.” Keep it factual.

7. Report Fake Listings and Spam Reviews

This may sound strange, but there can be imposters in the map. Fake competitors. Some listings use a false address or a made-up name to steal calls. Search your area and look for odd ones. Use the “Suggest an edit” option to report them.

Flag fake reviews on your own profile too. Google may take days to act, so save screenshots as proof. Do this check twice a year. A clean map helps real businesses like yours stand out.
